IPLCricBet is happy to report that Rishabh is fully healed from his injuries and will be participating in the upcoming matches. After a fortunate escape from the near death car crash on 30th December, everyone had serious doubts if he would play again. Luckily, all those doubts have melted now.
All about Rishabh’s recovery after his near death experience
What happened to Rishabh Pant in December 2022?
After 14 months of continuous struggle and exasperation, Rishabh has gained his fitness clearance from the NCA. On that fateful night, he suffered grave injuries while he was trying to rescue himself from the car. The car burst into flames mere seconds later. Due to his extreme situation, there were serious doubts about reviving his international career.
The official BCCI statement about his injuries is as follows.
The India wicket keeper – batter had “two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee and has also hurt his right wrist, ankle, toe and has suffered abrasion injuries on his back.”
The actual condition of his injuries sounded more dreadful when Pant explained it all in an interview with Star Sports earlier this year. He recounted the experience when he lay face down after the accident and his right knee had been dislocated.
He said these statements as mentioned below, as reported by starpunternews.
“There was someone around, so I asked if he could help getting the leg back in position. He helped the knee get back in place”.
“If there was any nerve damage, there was a possibility of amputation. That is when I felt scared.”
Harsh journey back to Pant’s full recovery with surgeries
Rishabh had to undergo a plastic surgery and two major knee ligament reconstruction procedures. He also had to follow an 11 – month rehabilitation routine that included 3 physiotherapy sessions per day and aqua therapy. That was followed by a custom fitness program which prioritised strength building, flexibility and running.
After Pant was treated for impact injuries in a local hospital, he was shifted to a better hospital in Dehradun. In January 2023, he was airlifted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for intensive treatment.
He endured plastic surgery for the facial abrasions and injuries. Knee scans showed that there were tears in the posterior cruciate ligament, the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament. All of these needed reconstructive procedures to heal completely.
Recovery routine back to the cricketing world
Rishabh couldn’t move out of his bed for about a month. He posted his photo on social media of him walking on the terrace on crutches with the right leg in a cast on 10 February last year. His thoughts on the moment in his own words were as follows. “I wanted to update all the people who had prayed for my recovery and health.”
According to an interview with IANS, Rishabh showed his strong will to recover with the following statement.
“I asked the doctor how long it would take for me to recover. I told him everybody is speaking different things, but you will give me the most clarity about it. He said it would take 16 to 18 months. I told the doctor that whatever timeline he gave me, I would reduce six months from it.”
As good luck and his perseverance would have it, he kept his word, recovering fully in just 14 months.
