Akash Madhwal is a talented Indian cricketer, known for getting the ball to skid through from a quick arm action.
Early Life: He was born in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. Hailing from an army family, he finished his primary and secondary education at Roorkee Public Senior Secondary School. He pursued a civil engineering degree from the College of Engineering, Roorkee.
Early Career: Uttarakhand Cricket Association called Madhwal for trials. This marked his entry to competitive cricket.
Domestic Career: He made his T20 cricket and first class cricket debut in 2019. His List A debut was in 2021.
IPL Career
RCB recruited him as a net bowler for IPL 2021. The next year, MI signed him on as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav. He did not play any matches in 2022. But, he was retained for IPL 2023 with a tough debut and a stellar breakthrough.
IPL 2023 breakthrough: The league match against Punjab Kings at Mohali marked his fantastic IPL debut. Though his beginning was not so smooth, he bowled the last over of Punjab Kings innings with glimpses of his death bowling.
After replacing Arjun Tendulkar in the MI bowling lineup, Madhwal’s breakthrough continued. He became known for his bowling repertoire, especially those in powerplay overs and death overs.
Mumbai Indians secured a playoff berth and the 4th place on the points table because of Madhwal’s bowling efforts.
Major Achievements:
- He was the first Uttarakhand based home grown cricketer to play in the Indian Premier League.
- His best bowling figures in IPL are figures of 5/5 in 3.3 overs. This was during the eliminator match in IPL 2023 to restrict Lucknow Super Giants to 101 all out in a run chase of 183. This surpassed the 13 – year old record held by Doug Bollinger as the latter claimed 4/13 during IPL 2010.
- He broke Ankit Rajpoot’s IPL record for registering best bowling figures by an uncapped player.
- Madhwal became the first bowler to take a fifer in an IPL playoff match.
- He tied the record of Anil Kumble for taking the most economical five wicket-haul with least number of runs conceded in an IPL innings. This was his maiden 5 wicket haul in IPL and T20 cricket.
